Kids and Chiropractic Care FAQ
Why do Kids need chiropractic?
Kids and chiropractic care can start at birth. Children can suffer from spinal misalignments (“chiropractic subluxations”) resulting from falls, tumbles, sports activities, poor posture (‘slouching”), back packs, or even the birth process itself. Spinal segments can be jammed or pushed out of place causing different types of problems.
Such jamming can cause problems in the nervous system which in turn can affect the child’s health. Even the position of the baby in the womb or problems during labor from the trauma of the trip through the birth canal, or from the birthing process itself can create problems.
What type of problems can develop?
Some common childhood problems included breathing issues, chronic earaches, sore throats, colic, headaches, bed-wetting, foot problems, Scoliosis (lateral curvature of the spine), joint or “growing” pains for which parents bring their children to the chiropractor.
Unless a child has an obvious problem, it is often difficult for parents to recognize such spinal misalignments. Some signs can be chronic head or body tilt to one sign, walking or running problems, nursing or feeding issues, abnormal movement or muscle weakness, or even sleeping difficulties.
It is not always easy for someone other than a chiropractor, highly trained in evaluating the spine, to determine if the child has a problem, just as it is difficult for someone other than a dentist to determine if a child has any cavities. Both cases take the skills of a trained specialist to perform a thorough evaluation.
Ear Infections
By the age of three, many children have had one or more ear infections. There are numerous problems with chronic antibiotic usage for children with ear infections such as allergic reaction, GI upset, antibiotic resistance and destruction of the gut's intestinal flora leading to yeast proliferation.
Tubes in the ears are mostly antibiotic/medical failures with infections returning within two months and the tubes can cause hearing loss years later. Children with ear infections often can be helped by chiropractic adjustments.
How does Dr. Marc Lawson, D.C. treat children?
Dr. Lawson, D.C. conducts a health and spinal exam including various orthopedic tests and assessments. The result is a assessment of a youngster's current health and spinal evaluation.
At that point Dr. Lawson, D.C., can determine if chiropractic care is needed.
Dr. Lawson DC then works to correct these spinal misalignments with safe and effective techniques called chiropractic adjustments. These are extremely gentle, modified adjusting techniques to alleviate problems in child patients.
Spinal adjustments for infants and young children involve very light finger-tip adjustments. A light spinal adjustment is usually sufficient to restore mobility to spinal joints which have become locked and are causing interference with the normal function of the nervous system.
Should I just see my Child's Pediatrician to Treat These Problems?
Good question for parents to ask. However, when it comes to subtle joint or spinal health problems, your child's pediatrician is necessary a trained specialist in this area. The medical profession does have doctors who specialize in spinal problems, known as orthopedic surgeons, but these doctors generally work on the more serious spinal conditions usually requiring surgery. Few medical doctors are trained to recognize the subtle spinal problems which can cause the conditions listed above.
Most medical doctors are somewhat aware of the chiropractic care and medical research studies on such care for children. Good communication between the chiropractor and the pediatrician working together on a child’s health issue can be of great benefit, with each specialist working on the area they are train in for good results.
Does It Hurt? Is it safe?
Generally speaking treatment does not hurt. Thousand of children have been treated by chiropractors for close to 100 years, yet a check of malpractice records of large insurance companies show how safe it is with very few claims. This excellent safety record speaks for itself.
